One of the most common questions we ask God is: 'What should I do?' Whether it's a career decision, a relationship crossroad, or a daily dilemma, we long for direction. The good news is that God doesn't hide His will — He reveals it to those who seek Him.

God guides us through His Word, His Spirit, wise counsel, circumstances, and prayer. He's not playing hide-and-seek with His plan for our lives. He's a Shepherd who leads — and sheep who listen will find their way.

This study explores how God guides us, how to discern His voice, and how to walk confidently when the path ahead is unclear.

1

God's Promise to Guide Us

Anchoring our confidence in God's commitment to lead.

Proverbs 3:5-6
"Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don't lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight."

Insight: The promise is conditional: trust, don't lean on yourself, acknowledge Him in all ways. When we do our part, He straightens our path.

Psalms 32:8
"I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you."

Insight: God doesn't just point the direction — He counsels with His eye on us. He watches over us as He guides, like a parent teaching a child to walk.

Isaiah 30:21
"and when you turn to the right hand, and when you turn to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, "This is the way. Walk in it.""

Insight: God's guidance comes when we're at a crossroads — right or left. And He speaks from behind, as a gentle voice guiding from a position of protection.

Reflection Questions

2

How do you typically hear God's voice? Through Scripture, prayer, people, circumstances?

3

How God Leads Us

The various ways God provides direction for our lives.

Psalms 119:105
"NUN Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path."

Insight: God's Word is described as a lamp — not a floodlight. It often illuminates just the next step, not the entire journey. That's enough.

John 16:13
"However, when he, the Spirit of truth, has come, he will guide you into all truth, for he will not speak from himself; but whatever he hears, he will speak. He will declare to you things that are coming."

Insight: The Holy Spirit is our personal guide into truth. He's not passive — He actively speaks, declares, and leads.

James 1:5
"But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him."

Insight: When we don't know what to do, the answer is simple: ask. God doesn't scold us for needing wisdom — He gives it generously.

Reflection Questions

1

Are you looking for a floodlight when God is offering a lamp? Can you trust the next step?

2

How attentive are you to the Holy Spirit's promptings in your daily life?

3

When was the last time you simply asked God for wisdom about a specific situation?

Walking Confidently in God's Will

Moving forward with faith even when the path isn't fully clear.

Romans 12:2
"Don't be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God."

Insight: Discerning God's will requires a renewed mind. When we think like God thinks, His will becomes clearer.

Proverbs 16:9
"A man's heart plans his course, but Yahweh directs his steps."

Insight: We plan and God directs. Both are true. Don't be paralyzed waiting for a clear sign — make wise plans and trust God to adjust your steps.

Psalms 37:23
"A man's steps are established by Yahweh. He delights in his way."

Insight: God doesn't just establish our steps — He delights in our way. He enjoys guiding us. Seeking His direction pleases Him.

Reflection Questions

1

Where might conformity to the world be clouding your discernment?

2

Are you paralyzed waiting for a sign, or moving forward in faith and trusting God to redirect?

3

How does knowing God delights in your way encourage you to seek Him?

🙏 Closing Prayer

Good Shepherd, lead me. I trust that You know the way even when I don't. Give me wisdom for the decisions I face. Illuminate my next step with Your Word. Speak to me through Your Spirit. Surround me with wise counsel. And help me to walk forward in faith, trusting that You direct my steps even when I can't see the destination. I acknowledge You in all my ways. Make my paths straight. Amen.
