Courage in the Bible isn't the absence of fear — it's obedience in the presence of fear. God never commands us to be brave because we're naturally capable. He commands courage because He promises to go with us.

From Joshua entering the Promised Land to the early church boldly preaching the gospel, Scripture is filled with ordinary people who did extraordinary things because they trusted an extraordinary God.

This study will help you discover the source of true courage, see it modeled in Scripture, and find the boldness to face whatever lies ahead — not in your own strength, but in God's.

1

God's Command to Be Courageous

Why God tells us to be strong — and what makes it possible.

Joshua 1:9
"Haven't I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don't be afraid. Don't be dismayed, for Yahweh your God is with you wherever you go.""

Insight: Courage is commanded — which means it's not a personality trait but an act of obedience. And the reason we can obey is that God goes with us everywhere.

Deuteronomy 31:6
"Be strong and courageous. Don't be afraid or scared of them, for Yahweh your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.""

Insight: Two promises fuel courage: God goes with us, and He will never fail or forsake us. These aren't nice sentiments — they're iron guarantees.

2 Timothy 1:7
"For God didn't give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control."

Insight: Fear is not from God. He replaces it with power to act, love that overcomes, and self-control that keeps us steady under pressure.

Courage in the Face of Opposition

How God's people found boldness when the stakes were high.

Acts 4:29-31
"Now, Lord, look at their threats, and grant to your servants to speak your word with all boldness, while you stretch out your hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of your holy Servant Jesus." When they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were gathered together. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness."

Insight: The early church didn't pray for the threats to go away — they prayed for boldness to keep going despite them. And God answered with the Holy Spirit's power.

Proverbs 28:1
"The wicked flee when no one pursues; but the righteous are as bold as a lion."

Insight: Righteousness produces boldness. When we walk with God, we carry a lion's confidence — not because of who we are, but because of whose we are.

The Secret of Unstoppable Courage

Understanding that our courage comes from God's presence, not our ability.

Psalms 27:1
"By David. Yahweh is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? Yahweh is the strength of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid?"

Insight: When we know who God is — light, salvation, strength — the question 'whom shall I fear?' becomes rhetorical. The answer is: no one.

Romans 8:31
"What then shall we say about these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?"

Insight: Paul doesn't deny that opposition exists. He asks whether it ultimately matters when God Himself is on our side. The answer is a resounding no.

Psalms 31:24
"Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who hope in Yahweh."

Insight: Courage is linked to hope in God. When our hope is in the right place, courage follows naturally.

🙏 Closing Prayer

Mighty God, give me the courage to face what lies ahead — not in my own strength but in Yours. You have commanded me to be strong and courageous, so I choose to obey. Replace my fear with power, love, and self-control. Fill me with the boldness of the early church. Remind me that You go before me, You stand beside me, and You will never fail me. If You are for me, I have nothing to fear. Make me bold as a lion for Your glory. Amen.
